Laboratories
The Postgraduate Program in Animal Biology counts with 11 laboratories (with subdivisions) and a Museum, all of them own and fully equipped, in permanent improvement. In addition to these, there is also a laboratory in the Campus de Florestal and another in Rio Paranaíba. Some activities are complemented in multi-user laboratories within the UFV, or in national and international service platforms. Funding for the implementation, maintenance and expansion of UFV laboratories has been done by institutions supporting teaching, research and extension such as FAPEMIG, CNPq and CAPES. The laboratories of the Department of Animal Biology, under the coordination of permanent teachers are:
1. BEAGLE – Laboratory of Molecular Systematics
Research Lines: Molecular systematics of vertebrates with emphasis on freshwater fish. Studies of genomics and proteomics of migratory fish.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 100 m²).
Activity: Basic and applied research.
Physical structure: 5 freezers -20 ° C (two of them with tissue collection in ethanol); 1 ultrafreezer; PCR machine with gradient; four light microscopes; two stereoscopic binocular microscopes, one of them with coupled camera; growing and drying greenhouses; distiller and deionizer; bench pH meter; 3 water bath; six computers; 3 centrifuges for eppendorf tubes and Falcon tubes, one being refrigerated; 2 Trinocular Biological Microscopes with infinite correction optics Bx51-Fl-Iv, coupled to digital image capture system, one of them with special filter for fluorescence; both operate in the multiuser regime in UFV and UFOP; agarose gel photodocumentation system; agarose and polyacrylamide gelling system; a distiller and a Milli-Q system, 1 exhaust hood and 1 laminar flow hood. The laboratory assumed the curation of the systematic collection of fish, a sub-unit of the Zoology Museum Professor João Moojen – UFV.
2. LABCOL – Laboratory of Systematics and Biology of Coleoptera
Research Lines: Systematics and ecology of Coleoptera.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 80 m²).
Activity: Basic research.
Physical structure: equipped with experiment laboratory, teacher’s office and air-conditioned room for experimentation. It houses a scientific collection of Coleoptera specimens.
3. LAV – Laboratory of Bees and Wasps
Lines of Research: Risk analysis of transgenic plants and pesticides to pollinators, Pollination, Entomology, Animal Behavior, Ecotoxicology.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 80 m²).
Activity: Basic and applied research.
Physical structure: laboratory for experiments, teacher’s office and air-conditioned room for experimentation. Total area divided into air-conditioned room for in vitro breeding, experimental preparation area and study environment. The laboratory has individual protection equipment (EPI) for the handling of bees and wasps, materials for in vitro breeding and maintenance of experimental nests, an autoclave and a refrigerator. The LAV team works mainly with ecotoxicological studies applied to the preservation of meliponines and is interested in researches with pollination, animal behavior and agrochemical risk analysis to other groups of insects.
4. Animal Biology Laboratory
Line of research: Taxonomy, biogeography, conservation and natural history of Neotropical birds.
Location: UFV Campus Florestal (Physical area of 30 m²).
Activity: Basic research.
Physical structure: 3 binoculars; 2 GPS devices; 1 range finder; 1 borescope; 1 notebook and printer / scanner; 2 digital recorders equipped with directional microphones and headphones; basic camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, backpacks etc); 10 mist nets; basic material for anvilamento (pliers, washers, scales type PESOLA, etc); basic material for taxidermy (scissors, tweezers, pliers, scalpels, bottles, etc); 3 pressure carbines for collecting birds.
5. Laboratory of Biology and Fish Management
Research lines: Fish production, Nutrition and fish feeding.
Location: UFV fish farm (physical area 34,100 m²).
Activity: Basic research, applied and extension.
Physical structure: This laboratory has a joint support area of approximately 34,100 m², with 86 tanks and external nurseries of earth and / or masonry; a theoretical and practical classroom, a feed storage room and a fish farm room and a reception room. The specific laboratories are: fish nutrition laboratory, with 30 m² and aquariums equipped with biological filter, artificial aeration and temperature control; 1 forced circulation stove; 1 digital scale; 1 vertical freezer of 280 L; 1 refrigerator of 280 L and 1 incubator stove B.O.D .; 1 Leitz microscope with phase contrast and 1 Leitz magnifying glass with built-in clear camera; PH meter; oximeter; conductivity meter; ammonia meter; nitrite and nitrate. The induced reproduction laboratory has a room of 32 m² for weighing and preparation of matrices, equipped with scale and incubators of eggs of 60 and 220 L of capacity and 1 tank of 4,000 L for matrices, subdivided into four tanks. Another laboratory of 32 m² intended for work with recirculation of water. The 86 ponds and ponds add up to a water depth of approximately 1.79ha.
6. Laboratory of Animal Ecotoxicology and LEQ – Laboratory of Echophysiology of Chiroptera
Research Lines: Ecophysiology of bats and Ecotoxicology of wild animals, developing projects mainly on the action of environmental factors, such as changes in diet, temperature and seasonality, and action of environmental contaminants on hormonal regulation, metabolism, development and reproduction of vertebrates.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 80 m²).
Activity: Basic and applied research.
Physical structure: two rooms, containing the following equipment: 1 horizontal freezer; 1 vertical freezer; 1 ice machine; 1 ELISA; 1 spectrophotometer; 1 stove; 1 precision scale; 1 exhaust hood; 2 centrifuges; 1 water bath; 1 tube agitator (vortex); 1 shaker with heater; 2 homogenizers; 1 refrigerator; 8 computers.
7. Laboratory of Ecological and Evolutionary Genetics
Research Lines: Genetic Diversity, Fish Evolution and Conservation, Domestic Cat Genetics, Classical and Molecular Cytogenetics of Fish, Evolutionary Genetics, Ecological and Evolutionary Genetics.
Location: UFV Campus Rio Paranaíba (Physical area of 21 m²).
Activity: Basic research.
Physical structure: This laboratory has an analytical balance; vortex type stirrer; electrophoresis system; transilluminator; thermocycler; microcentrifuge; centrifuge; BOD stove; Freezer; refrigerator; 3 binocular optical microscopes and 1 microscope with epifluorescence system and digital image capture system.
8. Animal Morphology Laboratory
Lines of Research: Morphophysiology of the Vertebrate Digestive System, Animal Reproduction, Descriptive and Experimental Spermatogenesis, Histology.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 40 m²).
Activity: Basic research, applied and extension activities.
Physical structure: 1 FANEM pH meter; an Olympus CX40 microscope; a Kyowa – Coleman microscope; two stereoscopic microscopes; 1 stove for drying and sterilization FANEM 315 SE; 1 water bath; 1 magnetic stirrer; 1 analytical balance LIBROR AEL-200; 1 Olympus CUT 4055 microtome; 1 refrigerator of 280L and 2 computers.
9. LAFAP – Laboratory of Physiology Applied to Fish Farming
Research Lines: Comparative Physiology, Fish Nutrition, Cutting and Ornamental Fish Production, Natural Variation of Stable Isotopes and Animal Metabolism, Plant Extracts as Growth Promoters for Fish.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 100 m²).
Activity: Basic research, applied and extension.
Physical structure: The laboratory is divided into two rooms, one of them for conducting the biological phase of the experiments and the other for the laboratory analysis. In its basic infrastructure, this laboratory has a teacher’s office, benches, sinks, shelves under the benches, suspended shelves, in addition to glass drying drying greenhouses, histological processing greenhouses, heating plates, digital balance, analytical balance , digital monitor for glucose, lactate, triglyceride and cholesterol blood tests, 1 refrigerator, 1 freezer and 2 computers. The laboratory for the condition of the experiments presents a radial compressor of air, 32 aquaria of 60L in system of recirculation of water with mechanical filters, biological and ultraviolet, with system of maintenance of the temperature by means of thermostat and heater. This laboratory also features 24 35 liter aquariums in static system.
10. LAPOC – Laboratory of Paleontology and Comparative Osteology
Lines of Research: Phylogenetic Systematics, Geometric Morphometry, Paleozoology, Osteology, Biogeography.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 80 m²).
Activity: Basic research.
Physical structure: The scientific collections of Paleontology and Chelonia and Crocodylia are maintained in the premises of LAPOC. Equipped with countertops and tools for preparing fossils. Benches for students and computers. Pneumatic hammer; 200 liter compressor; binocular stereoscopic microscope.
11. LPE – Laboratory of Experimental Pathology
Research Lines: The Laboratory of Experimental Pathology of UFV has as its research focus the biotechnological potential for the development of drugs that promote cutaneous, hepatic and pulmonary repair associated or not to diabetes and the development of alternatives for the treatment of Chagas disease with emphasis on toxicological analyzes.
Location: DBA (Physical area of 100 m²).
Activity: Basic and applied research.
Physical structure: This laboratory has a cold room; a tissue culture room; 1 inverted microscope; 1 CO2 stove; 1 voltage and amperage moderator; 1 stereoscopic microscope; 2 binocular optical microscopes; 1 culture stove; 1 distiller / deionizer; 1 vertical freezer -20 ° C; 3 computers; 1 biological microscope with digital camera coupled (photomicroscope).
12. Museum of Zoology João Moojen
Research Lines: Fish Systematics, Herpetology, Ornithology and Mastozoology.
Location: João Moojen Zoology Museum – Vila Gianetti (Physical area of 200 m2).
Activity: Basic research, applied and extension activities.
Physical structure:
It is divided into two sectors: (i) Research: housing the systematic collections of all vertebrate groups, including three laboratories (Herpetology, Ornithology and Mastozoology) totaling an area of common use of approximately 120 m2. Among the equipment available are: 8 microscopes; 4 stereoscopic microscopes; 5 computers and a Fiat Uno vehicle allocated for Museum collections. And (ii) permanent exhibition area, with approximately 80 m2 and 100 pieces of animals. This sector receives an average of 3,000 students from public schools per year, with guided tours by students.

– In the premises of the Laboratory of Ornithology is the ornithological collection of the UFV, which has about 1800 taxidermized specimens. Most of the specimens originate from the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais and many of them were collected in the region of Viçosa in the 1930s by João Moojen. Equipped with recorders, directional microphones, parabola, collection and capture instruments, space for storage of wet and dry material.
– In the dependencies of the Laboratory of Mastozoology is the dry and humid collection of mammals, an area for preparation of taxidermy, a dermestério room, office of teacher and study hall. Equipped with 2 freezers; 1 refrigerator; 2 stereoscopic microscopes; 1 optical microscope; 1 stove;
– In the premises of the Laboratory of Herpetology is the wet collection of amphibians and reptiles, serpentary, teacher’s office. Equipped with freezer, refrigerator, optical microscope, stereoscopic microscope.
13. Experimental Range
Research lines: Incubation and development of fish larvae, Sexual inversion of tilapia, Production of aquatic animals, Management in raniculture, Slaughter and processing of frogs, Installations for breeding of frogs, Nutrition of frogs, Reproduction of frogs.
Location: Experimental Range UFV (Physical area of 200 m²).
Activity: Basic research, applied research and extension.
Physical Structure: The Experimental Range has four air-conditioned laboratories, two laboratories with precision equipment; a routine manipulation laboratory.

Research Line: Ultrastructure of reproductive, digestive and glandular organs in scanning and transmission microscopy, besides analysis of these organs in confocal microscopy.

Activities: In this center are carried out analyzes with electron microscopy and confocal.
Physical structure: The nucleus has 5 microscopy rooms, 2 laboratories for sample preparation, 1 secretariat and 2 engine rooms.

Research Line: Morphology, morphometry and stereology of reproductive, digestive and glandular organs.

Rooms for preparation and treatment of samples, microscopy rooms and teachers’ offices.

3. Laboratory of Experimental Biophysics (DBG)
Research topic: Plant biology of heavy metals, Bioremediation of aquatic environments impacted with arsenic and cadmium, Use of radioisotopes in biological research, Physiological studies of terrestrial plants with potential for use in revegetation programs of arsenic contaminated areas.

5. Laboratory of Plant Anatomy (DBV)
Research Line: Biology and plant anatomy.
Location: Department of Plant Biology (UFV) (Physical area of 100 m2).
Activities: Plant morphology focused on teaching, research and extension.
Physical structure: 1 microtome for resin; 2 photomicroscopes; 4 vertical freezers; 3 stoves; 1 chapel with exhaustion.
6. Biodiversity / Biochemistry Laboratory (DBB)
Research Line: Production technology for pharmaceutical inputs, Quality control of pharmaceutical inputs, Pharmaceutical bioprospection of plant species of the Atlantic Forest biome.
Location: Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Physical area of 120 m2).
Activities: Basic research, applied research and extension.
Physical structure: HPLC / DAD; analytical balance; chapel; soxhlet extractor battery; heating battery; ultraviolet light developers for CCD; rotary evaporators; centrifuge; computers.
7. Wood Physical Properties Laboratory (DEF)
Research Line: The Laboratory of Physical and Mechanical Properties of Madeira (LPM) is aligned with the most modern in Brazil in equipment and technologies related to the study of the characterization of wood and its derivatives, keeping in tune with the new world order , which provides for the rational and sustainable use of wood as an important raw material.
Location: Department of Forestry Engineering of UFV (Physical area of 1,802 m2).
Activities: Teaching, research and extension, as well as services to companies and institutions related to furniture and civil construction.
Physical structure: area built with the most modern equipment, the laboratory is qualified to perform the great majority of physical-chemical-anatomical-mechanical tests of wood, machining, drying and preservation of wood.
